UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONDITION

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the outside of the elbow. Despite its name, only a small percentage of sufferers actually play tennis — it’s extremely common in people who perform repetitive wrist and forearm movements at work or during daily activities.

Tennis elbow is classified as a tendinopathy — a condition where the extensor tendons of the forearm become overloaded, leading to microscopic tears, degeneration and pain. Physiotherapy is the most effective, evidence-based treatment and is strongly recommended before any surgical intervention.

At Physio Experts, our physiotherapists provide a structured tennis elbow rehabilitation programme using the latest evidence-based loading techniques to restore full tendon function and prevent recurrence.

Physiotherapy vs. Steroid Injection: While steroid injections provide quick short-term relief, physiotherapy produces significantly better long-term outcomes for tennis elbow. We offer both approaches and will advise on the best strategy for you.

Common Symptoms

WHY IT HAPPENS

Common Causes of Tennis Elbow Condition

Our physiotherapists assess all potential causes during your initial consultation to identify the root of your condition.

Repetitive Computer Use

Prolonged typing, mouse use and screen work causes repetitive micro-trauma to the extensor tendons — a leading cause in office workers.

Manual Work & Trade

Painting, plastering, plumbing and carpentry involve repetitive gripping and wrist extension that overloads the tendons.

Racket Sports

Despite the name, poor backhand technique in tennis or racket sports can contribute to lateral epicondyle overload.

Gym & Weight Training

Heavy lifting with improper grip technique, particularly rows and deadlifts, can overload the forearm extensors.

Smartphone Overuse

Extended mobile phone use requires sustained finger extension, loading the extensor tendons repeatedly over time.

Sudden Load Increase

Rapidly increasing repetitive arm activity — a new job, instrument practice or sport — without adequate tendon conditioning.

EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT

How Physiotherapy Helps

Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists use a combination of hands-on treatment, targeted exercises and education to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Tendon Loading Rehabilitation

Progressive eccentric and isometric loading exercises — proven to be the most effective long-term treatment for tendinopathy.

Manual Therapy

Elbow joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques to reduce pain, improve movement and restore normal forearm function.

Acupuncture & Dry Needling

Dry needling of the extensor tendon origin provides rapid pain relief and promotes healing — highly effective for tennis elbow.

Ergonomic Assessment & Advice

Identifying and modifying the activity that caused the problem — workstation setup, grip technique, and load management strategies.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Back Pain Physiotherapy — FAQs

How long does tennis elbow take to heal with physiotherapy?
Tennis elbow responds well to physiotherapy but requires patience — most patients see significant improvement within 6–12 weeks. Chronic cases (over 6 months) may need a longer programme. Consistency with your home exercise programme is crucial.
Should I rest my arm completely with tennis elbow?
Complete rest is not recommended — it doesn’t promote tendon healing. Physiotherapy uses a structured loading programme that progressively rehabilitates the tendon. You’ll be guided on what to avoid and what to do.
Is a steroid injection better than physiotherapy for tennis elbow?
Studies show that while steroid injections provide faster short-term relief, physiotherapy produces significantly better outcomes at 12 months. We offer both and will advise the right approach for your timeline and severity.

Will tennis elbow come back after physiotherapy?
With a proper rehabilitation programme and attention to the underlying cause (ergonomics, technique, load management), most patients achieve lasting recovery. Recurrence is common without addressing the root cause.

Do I need to stop work during treatment?
Not usually — we’ll advise on modifications to your work activities to allow recovery without stopping work entirely. In severe cases, a short period of relative rest may be recommended.
