UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONDITION

What is Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints in the UK, affecting approximately 1 in 3 adults at some point in their lives. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body — which also makes it one of the most vulnerable to injury and pain.

Whether your shoulder pain is caused by a sports injury, repetitive strain, a frozen shoulder, or wear and tear, physiotherapy is proven to be the most effective first-line treatment. Early intervention leads to faster recovery and reduces the risk of chronic pain.

At Physio Experts, our HCPC-registered physiotherapists conduct a thorough assessment to identify the exact source of your shoulder pain and design a personalised treatment programme.

Important: Untreated shoulder pain can lead to muscle weakness, joint stiffness and reduced function over time. Early physiotherapy intervention typically leads to faster, more complete recovery.

Common Symptoms

WHY IT HAPPENS

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

Our physiotherapists assess all potential causes during your initial consultation to identify the root of your condition.

Frozen Shoulder

Adhesive capsulitis causes severe stiffness and pain, developing gradually over months — physiotherapy is essential to restore movement.

Rotator Cuff Injury

Tears or inflammation of the rotator cuff tendons are common in athletes and those with repetitive overhead work.

Shoulder Impingement

When tendons become trapped and compressed during shoulder movements, causing sharp pain when raising the arm.

Osteoarthritis

Age-related cartilage wear in the shoulder joint causes pain, stiffness and reduced function — well managed with physiotherapy.

Sports Injury

Dislocations, labrum tears, and AC joint injuries from contact sport or overtraining require specialist rehabilitation.

Postural Strain

Prolonged desk work with poor posture creates chronic tension through the shoulder muscles and neck.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Back Pain Physiotherapy — FAQs

How long does shoulder pain physiotherapy take?
Most shoulder conditions improve significantly within 6–10 sessions. Frozen shoulder may require a longer programme of 3–6 months given its natural phases. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic timeline after your initial assessment.
Can physiotherapy help a frozen shoulder?
Yes — physiotherapy is the primary treatment for frozen shoulder. Gentle mobilisation, stretching and acupuncture help restore movement and reduce pain. Treatment is adapted to the stage of the condition.
Do I need a scan before starting physiotherapy?
Not usually. Our physiotherapists can diagnose most shoulder conditions through clinical examination alone. We’ll refer you for imaging if we feel it’s clinically necessary.

Will my shoulder pain come back after physiotherapy?
With a proper rehabilitation programme and adherence to your home exercise plan, most patients maintain their recovery long-term. We provide a tailored prevention plan at discharge.

Is physiotherapy covered by health insurance?
Yes — we accept BUPA, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality and Cigna. Please get authorisation from your insurer before your first appointment.
