Quick Facts About Back Pain

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a painful condition where the shoulder joint capsule becomes inflamed, thickened and tight — causing significant pain and a progressive loss of shoulder movement. It typically develops gradually and affects adults aged 40–60, with women affected more frequently than men.
Frozen shoulder progresses through three distinct phases: the freezing phase (increasing pain and stiffness), the frozen phase (stiffness with reducing pain) and the thawing phase (gradual return of movement). Physiotherapy is the key treatment at every stage of the condition.
At Physio Experts, our specialists are experienced in managing all three phases of frozen shoulder. We use a combination of manual therapy, acupuncture and progressive exercises to restore your shoulder function as efficiently as possible.
Diabetes & Frozen Shoulder: People with diabetes are significantly more likely to develop frozen shoulder. If you have diabetes and shoulder pain, early physiotherapy intervention is strongly recommended.
Our physiotherapists assess all potential causes during your initial consultation to identify the root of your condition.
People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are 2–4× more likely to develop frozen shoulder due to collagen changes.
Following a shoulder injury, fracture or surgery — prolonged immobility allows the capsule to stiffen and contract.
Menopause-related hormonal changes are a significant risk factor — explaining why women aged 40–60 are most affected.
Patients with heart disease, stroke or thyroid problems have a higher incidence of frozen shoulder.
In many cases, frozen shoulder develops spontaneously without a clear identifiable cause.
Periods of arm inactivity following any illness or injury can trigger the inflammatory process of adhesive capsulitis.
Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists use a combination of hands-on treatment, targeted exercises and education to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.
Treatment adapted to your current phase — pain management and gentle mobilisation in freezing, progressive stretching in frozen, strengthening in thawing.
Particularly effective in the painful freezing phase — acupuncture reduces pain and inflammation, enabling more effective physiotherapy.
Targeted shoulder capsule stretching exercises prescribed to progressively restore the range of motion lost through capsular contraction.
Guidance on using heat, warm water and movement to manage symptoms between sessions and accelerate recovery.
