UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONDITION

What is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a painful condition where the shoulder joint capsule becomes inflamed, thickened and tight — causing significant pain and a progressive loss of shoulder movement. It typically develops gradually and affects adults aged 40–60, with women affected more frequently than men.

Frozen shoulder progresses through three distinct phases: the freezing phase (increasing pain and stiffness), the frozen phase (stiffness with reducing pain) and the thawing phase (gradual return of movement). Physiotherapy is the key treatment at every stage of the condition.

At Physio Experts, our specialists are experienced in managing all three phases of frozen shoulder. We use a combination of manual therapy, acupuncture and progressive exercises to restore your shoulder function as efficiently as possible.

Diabetes & Frozen Shoulder: People with diabetes are significantly more likely to develop frozen shoulder. If you have diabetes and shoulder pain, early physiotherapy intervention is strongly recommended.

Common Symptoms

WHY IT HAPPENS

Common Causes

Our physiotherapists assess all potential causes during your initial consultation to identify the root of your condition.

Diabetes Mellitus

People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are 2–4× more likely to develop frozen shoulder due to collagen changes.

Post-Injury Immobilisation

Following a shoulder injury, fracture or surgery — prolonged immobility allows the capsule to stiffen and contract.

Hormonal Changes

Menopause-related hormonal changes are a significant risk factor — explaining why women aged 40–60 are most affected.

Cardiovascular Disease

Patients with heart disease, stroke or thyroid problems have a higher incidence of frozen shoulder.

Idiopathic Onset

In many cases, frozen shoulder develops spontaneously without a clear identifiable cause.

Prolonged Inactivity

Periods of arm inactivity following any illness or injury can trigger the inflammatory process of adhesive capsulitis.

EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT

How Physiotherapy Helps

Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists use a combination of hands-on treatment, targeted exercises and education to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Phase-Specific Manual Therapy

Treatment adapted to your current phase — pain management and gentle mobilisation in freezing, progressive stretching in frozen, strengthening in thawing.

Acupuncture for Pain Relief

Particularly effective in the painful freezing phase — acupuncture reduces pain and inflammation, enabling more effective physiotherapy.

Capsular Stretching Programme

Targeted shoulder capsule stretching exercises prescribed to progressively restore the range of motion lost through capsular contraction.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frozen Shoulder — FAQs

How long does frozen shoulder last with physiotherapy?
With physiotherapy, most patients move through the phases significantly faster than without treatment. The freezing phase lasts 2–9 months, frozen 4–12 months, and thawing 5–24 months — physiotherapy can compress this considerably.
Is frozen shoulder physiotherapy painful?
Treatment is always performed within your tolerance. The freezing phase requires gentle techniques, while the thawing phase allows more progressive work. Some post-treatment soreness is normal and expected — it means progress is being made.
Can a steroid injection help frozen shoulder?
A corticosteroid injection can reduce inflammation and pain — particularly in the freezing phase. We work alongside injection clinics and can advise whether this is appropriate for your stage of condition.

Will my frozen shoulder fully recover?
The majority of frozen shoulder cases do recover fully, though it can take 1–3 years without treatment. Physiotherapy significantly accelerates recovery. Most of our patients achieve full or near-full function.

Do you offer evening appointments for frozen shoulder?
Yes — we offer evening and weekend appointments at all 4 clinics specifically because we know how difficult daytime appointments can be when you’re working.

Does health insurance cover physiotherapy at Physio Experts?
Yes — we accept most major health insurance providers including BUPA, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality and Cigna. Please check with your insurer before booking and provide your authorisation code. We can also provide all necessary paperwork for your insurance claim.
