UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONDITION

What is Knee Pain?

Knee pain is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions in the UK, affecting people of all ages and activity levels — from recreational runners to office workers and older adults. The knee is the largest joint in the body and bears significant load during everyday activities.

From ligament injuries and cartilage problems to osteoarthritis and patellofemoral syndrome, knee pain has many potential causes. Physiotherapy is the evidence-based first-line treatment recommended by NICE for most knee conditions — and it works.

Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists carry out a comprehensive knee assessment to accurately diagnose your condition and develop a personalised rehabilitation plan that gets you back to doing what you love.

Did you know? Research shows that physiotherapy is as effective as surgery for many common knee conditions including meniscal tears and mild to moderate osteoarthritis — without the risks or recovery time.

Common Symptoms

WHY IT HAPPENS

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Our physiotherapists assess all potential causes during your initial consultation to identify the root of your condition.

Patellofemoral Syndrome

Pain at the front of the knee — very common in runners and cyclists. Caused by poor kneecap tracking due to muscle imbalances.

Osteoarthritis

Cartilage wear in the knee joint causing pain, stiffness and swelling. Physiotherapy is the primary NICE-recommended treatment.

Ligament Injuries

ACL, MCL or PCL ligament sprains and tears — often from sport. Require progressive physiotherapy rehabilitation.

Meniscal Tears

Cartilage tears in the knee from twisting injuries or degeneration. Physiotherapy can resolve most cases without surgery.

IT Band Syndrome

Inflammation of the iliotibial band on the outer knee — the most common overuse injury in runners.

Patellar Tendinopathy

Jumper's knee — tendon pain below the kneecap from repetitive loading. Requires specific loading rehabilitation.

EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT

How Physiotherapy Helps

Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists use a combination of hands-on treatment, targeted exercises and education to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Manual Therapy & Mobilisation

Hands-on techniques to reduce pain, restore normal knee movement and improve joint mechanics.

Progressive Strength Rehabilitation

Targeted quadriceps, hamstring and hip strengthening to stabilise the knee and address the root cause of pain.

Gait & Movement Analysis

Assessment of your walking and running mechanics to identify and correct movement patterns that are stressing the knee.

Taping & Bracing Advice

Patella taping and appropriate bracing to offload painful structures and allow pain-free movement during recovery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Back Pain Physiotherapy — FAQs

How long will knee physiotherapy take?
Most acute knee injuries improve within 6–8 sessions. Chronic conditions like osteoarthritis benefit from 8–12 sessions. ACL rehabilitation typically takes 6–12 months for full return to sport.
Can physiotherapy help knee osteoarthritis?
Yes — NICE guidelines recommend physiotherapy, exercise and weight management as the primary treatment for knee osteoarthritis. We use targeted strengthening and manual therapy to significantly reduce pain and improve function.
Do I need an MRI before starting physiotherapy?
Not usually — our physiotherapists can clinically diagnose most knee conditions. We’ll refer for imaging if it will change your treatment plan.

Can you treat a knee ligament injury without surgery?
Many ligament injuries, including partial ACL tears and most MCL injuries, respond very well to physiotherapy without surgery. We’ll give you an honest assessment of your options.

Is there anything I should do before my first appointment?
Yes — if your back pain is so severe that travelling to a clinic is difficult, our physiotherapists offer home visit physiotherapy across all clinic catchment areas. This is ideal for patients with acute flare-ups or limited mobility. Contact us to arrange a home visit appointment.

Does health insurance cover physiotherapy at Physio Experts?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the knee. Bring any previous scan reports or medical letters if you have them. Arrive 5 minutes early to complete a short health questionnaire.
