Quick Facts About Sciatica

— physio resolves most sciatica without surgical intervention
Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis — it describes pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. The pain typically affects one side of the body and can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating pain.
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes compressed or irritated — most commonly by a herniated lumbar disc, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome. Physiotherapy is the primary treatment recommended by NICE and is highly effective for the majority of sciatica cases.
At Physio Experts, our HCPC-registered physiotherapists diagnose the exact cause of your sciatica and design a treatment programme that relieves pain, restores function and prevents recurrence.
When to seek urgent help: If you experience loss of bladder or bowel control, saddle anaesthesia (numbness in the groin/inner thighs) or rapidly progressive leg weakness, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Our physiotherapists assess all potential causes during your initial consultation to identify the root of your condition.
The most common cause — a bulging or herniated disc in the lumbar spine presses directly on the sciatic nerve root.
Narrowing of the spinal canal compresses the nerve roots, causing sciatica — more common in adults over 50.
The piriformis muscle in the buttock compresses the sciatic nerve — causing sciatica without a disc problem.
One vertebra slipping forward over another can compress nerve roots and cause sciatic symptoms.
Arthritic or inflamed facet joints in the lumbar spine can irritate nearby nerve roots causing radiating pain.
Direct trauma to the lower back or buttock can irritate or damage the sciatic nerve causing pain and neurological symptoms.
Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists use a combination of hands-on treatment, targeted exercises and education to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.
Hands-on techniques to reduce pain, restore normal knee Gentle nerve mobilisation techniques (neurodynamics) to reduce sciatic nerve irritation and restore normal nerve movement.
Targeted exercises to decompress the affected disc or nerve root and strengthen the muscles supporting the lumbar spine.
Joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques to reduce spinal compression, improve mobility and relieve sciatic pain.
Evidence-based acupuncture provides effective pain relief for sciatica and reduces nerve inflammation — often rapidly effective.
