UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONDITION

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is the sensation that you or the world around you is spinning or moving when there is no actual movement. It is a symptom of an underlying vestibular (inner ear or brain) disorder, not a diagnosis in itself. Vertigo ranges from mild and occasional to severe and debilitating — significantly affecting daily life, work and safety.

The most common cause is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) — a highly treatable condition where tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear become displaced. BPPV responds rapidly to specific repositioning manoeuvres performed by a trained physiotherapist, with most patients achieving complete resolution in 1–3 sessions.

At Physio Experts, our physiotherapists with specialist vestibular training conduct a thorough assessment using validated clinical tests (Dix-Hallpike, Roll Test, Head Impulse Test) to identify the specific type and cause of your vertigo — and design a targeted treatment programme accordingly.

Common Symptoms

WHY IT HAPPENS

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Our physiotherapists assess all potential causes during your initial consultation to identify the root of your condition.

BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)

Displaced calcium crystals (otoconia) in the semicircular canals trigger brief, intense spinning with certain head positions. The most common cause of vertigo.

Vestibular Neuritis

Viral inflammation of the vestibular nerve causes sudden severe vertigo lasting days, followed by persistent imbalance requiring vestibular rehabilitation.

Labyrinthitis

Inflammation of the inner ear labyrinth causing both hearing loss and vertigo — requiring specialist vestibular rehabilitation for full recovery.

Meniere's Disease

Fluid pressure abnormalities in the inner ear cause episodes of severe vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus — managed with vestibular physiotherapy.

Central Vertigo

Vertigo originating from the brain or brainstem (migraine-associated vertigo, cerebellar conditions) — requires specialist neurological and vestibular assessment.

Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness

Chronic dizziness and visual motion sensitivity following a vestibular event — highly responsive to vestibular rehabilitation and habituation exercises.

EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT

How Physiotherapy Helps

Our HCPC-registered physiotherapists use a combination of hands-on treatment, targeted exercises and education to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Canalith Repositioning Manoeuvres

The Epley, Semont and Brandt-Daroff manoeuvres reposition displaced otoconia in BPPV — resolving vertigo in 80–90% of cases within 1–3 sessions.

Vestibular Habituation Exercises

Specific gaze stabilisation and head movement exercises that retrain the brain to compensate for vestibular asymmetry — essential in vestibular neuritis recovery.

Gaze Stabilisation Training

Exercises to retrain the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) — improving the ability to maintain stable vision during head movement.

Balance Rehabilitation

Progressive balance and gait training to restore confidence and reduce falls risk — critical in older patients with vestibular dysfunction.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Back Pain Physiotherapy — FAQs

Can physiotherapy cure vertigo?
Yes — for BPPV (the most common cause), physiotherapy has a 90% success rate, often resolving in 1–3 sessions. Other vestibular conditions also respond very well to vestibular rehabilitation.
How quickly will I see improvement?
BPPV typically resolves in 1–3 sessions. Vestibular neuritis and other conditions improve over 4–8 weeks of vestibular rehabilitation. Most patients notice significant improvement within the first 2–3 sessions.
Do I need a GP referral for vertigo physiotherapy?
No — you can self-refer directly. However, if you have sudden severe vertigo with headache, double vision, difficulty speaking or limb weakness, seek emergency medical attention immediately as these may indicate a stroke.

What is the Epley manoeuvre?
The Epley manoeuvre is a series of head and body positions that guide displaced calcium crystals out of the sensitive part of the inner ear back to their correct location. It is safe, effective and can be performed in a single session.

Do you offer home visits for severe vertigo?
Yes — for patients whose vertigo is too severe to travel safely, home visits are available. Our physiotherapist can perform the Epley manoeuvre and begin vestibular rehabilitation at home.
